Eating Crow

Figuratively.

Not long ago our internet service had some issues and we lost access to all sites except our g-mail accounts and school e-mail. We quickly assumed this was because the government made good on their promise to block sites like Wordpress and Facebook (and apparently a whole lot more!). We groaned and talked about "developing country this" and "government censorship" that. We went as far as to move our WordPress blog to this one so we could continue blogging in the face of oppression. It did seem strange that the government was blocking sites like Vietnam News and the site from the cool little t-shirt shop in town. But no matter. It must be their fault or the fault of the ISP we were using.

Our internet came back on for some reason and we had a week or so of good coverage.

Then, four days ago the same thing happened again. I moaned and groaned about this place we live and how hard it was to be cut off from the world (ie I couldn't Skype or use our Vonage phone). Then I get a call today from our property manager. "Mr. Mike, you have not paid your internet bill from last month. Please visit the shop and pay."

I paid and we're back up and running. This place really does work. It just works differently than we are used to. I am used to a bill coming or maybe an e-mail. Here, you are really just supposed to know that the 5th of the month you pay your internet bill. Take 550,000 VND to the little shop next to the CityMart and pay it. That's it.

It is good to be back. A little slice of humble pie now and then doesn't hurt.

  1. Oh Mike - that's really a happy solution to your tech problems - you can still make me laugh out loud from so far away. Love you and welcome back! Mom

  2. Haha I feel you guys. I must've had several feasts worth of humble pie at this point, but you never quite fill up on it. It doesn't taste good, but it's healthy!
