Bob Dylan in Saigon

Sunday night, Mike and I hopped on our bikes to ride over to The Crescent, an upscale shopping development near our house, where we met friends, drank beers and bottled Jim Beam 'n Cokes from Circle K, sitting on the sidewalk, watching the sun set over the lake, and listened to a Kiwi musician on a small stage playing great covers of old classics. Eventually, we stocked up again at the Circle K for our two-mile shuttle bus trip to the historic Bob Dylan Live in Vietnam concert down the road at RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology). Woo Hooooooo!

We haven't been waiting for this concert for months, because the buzz only started a few weeks ago when the government decided to let Bob play.

The motivation of the eclectic and multinational crowd was hard to discern. Did they love Bob Dylan? Did they want to be part of a historic event? Did they want to attend the only rock concert in all of Southeast Asia (except for the Backstreet Boys in March) in 2011? Whatever it was, they mostly hung back and hung out on blankets and Mike and I were able to snake up through the crowd without really pushing at all, until we were about thirty feet from the stage. Nice!

Here's what the Seattle Times had to say about the concert.
