Part Three: Ton Le Sap Lake
One of our final days in Cambodia we took a tour of Ton Le Sap Lake and the floating village there. There are many of these floating villages on this, the largest lake in SE Asia. What surprised me was learning that this village was made up of Vietnamese who had immigrated there and could not afford to live on the mainland.
One the way to the lake.
These mobile houses are packed up and moved to
higher ground during the rainy season.

Cousin Charlie looking out at the village.
These children greeted us when we arrived at a floating convenience store.
They paddled over and surprised us with huge, live snakes that they were selling.
Initially I thought they were selling photographs with the snakes
but I was later told these snakes were sold for eating.

It was both incredible and very sad to see these small children
desperately trying to get tourists' attention to sell their snakes.

Back on land we drove by a "hammock bar" and stopped for what could be one of my favorite beers ever. It was so relaxing to sit in a hammock and look out at white birds flying around bright green rice paddies...with a beer. Why is this not happening in more countries?
This is us on our way back from the hammock bar.
You're the one who always makes me laugh out loud! Inherited that from your Dad. Miss you, Mike! Mom
ReplyDeleteWhat a nifty batch of photos here. Love the pig one and would have gone crazy to get a shot of that, supposing that I'd been there and also had my camera. Hammock bar looks very fine except I didn't know Lauren's feet were so big!
ReplyDeleteThe children selling the snakes is an amazing sight. It's a shame for the snakes as well as the kids but on the other hand it looks like fun paddling around in your own plastic tub boat. You wonder why they're trying to sell to white tourists. Has one EVER bought a live snake?
BTW Chucking Charlie looks like he's having as much fun on that boat as Colin had on the boat for the Mekong Delta tour.
My feet AREN'T that big. And my neck tendons don't really stick out that much. . .
ReplyDeleteYes, the boat was not Charlie's favorite part.
