Vietnam Alphabet L

L = Lemon-limes and Lemongrass

More alphabet items related to food and drinks!  Can you tell what we do with our time here? These Vietnamese "lemons" which look like limes, but are a bit milder, maybe? are plentiful and inexpensive.  These four were 17,000vnd (80 cents).  The boys love making homemade lemon juice and it's on every menu, either with still or soda water.  Sometimes we get a bowl of lime wedges and sugar in a little dish to make our own, sometimes it comes strong and sweet and we have to let the ice melt to drink it.
Lemons, lemongrass, and frangipani/plumaria from our tree

The best thing to make with the lemongrass (bunch of four for 2,500vnd, 12 cents) is lemongrass syrup.  We put the lemongrass syrup in our lemon juices and in our Chatham Cocktails, the amazing yummy drink we discovered at The Refinery and worked for months (including a search for ginger liqueur that ended in Hanoi) to recreate with gin, ginger liqueur, lemon-lime juice, and lemongrass syrup.  Lemongrass syrup also goes in my own passionfruit martini recipe (The My Thai Martini).  Yup, we just sit around and make up cocktails.  Then we drink them.
